rosetta, philae and the comet

has anyone else been following this closely?

it's a pity philae's battery went flat due to lack of sunlight.
mrsbradey

Shame they landed in a crater! I don't suppose it had parking sensors fitted, and in fairness I think they only got one go at the landing. Maybe if the asteroid moves it will get some solar energy in and charge up, does it work like that?
cait

that seems to be the hope. the comet is heading towards the earth and around the sun, where it will get more sunlight.
mrsbradey

Hope they get it sorted, as it was a lot of work to get it there!
cait

it also cost a few quid, about a billion euros or pounds.

they claim to have achieved 80% of their science goals already, according to something i read today.

there's a map of the positions and orbits  of the comet and the planets here

Problems start when they discover that the wee bump that it made when landing shifted its orbit a tiny bit and now it's due to collide with Earth on its next spin round the solar  system.

Hope not, if it landed on Wick it could do hundreds of pounds worth of damage.
cait

they wouldn't have had the problem with sunlight if they'd taken a bit of genuine caithness plut on board with them.

the pioneer craft have been going for more than 40 years powered by these things. there's precious little sunlight out where they are now.
